CILL MHEÁIN

When the Coleman family relocated to Cahermaculick, Kilmaine became their new parish. My Grandparents, John and Mary Coleman, and their four children, Mary, Pat, John and Jim would have attended this church on a number of occasions but as the church at Shrule was closer to them, it became the one they attended for Sunday mass. It was also the church that my generation attended except on those few occasions when members of the family were making their First Communion or Confirmation.

In the late 1940's, Gortjordan School began to be used for Sunday Mass but the classroom was too small to accommodate everyone. To resolve the situation, the local people got together and on a voluntary basis built a new church in the early 50's adjacent to the school. Thereafter, it was a choice between Gortjordan and Shrule and it came down to which time suited one the better on the day.

These photos were taken during the Clan Coleman Reunion in 2004 when a group of us visited the the Kilmaine Parish Church on Saturday 7th August.
