Kill (Cille) Abbey also known as ‘Killeenbrenan of the Virgin Mary’ was the first and most important house of the Franciscan Third Order Regulars to be established in Ireland near Shrule by the De Burgos, a prominent sept in the district at the time ( Impressive remains of their castle at nearby Shrule still stand today).
While many aspects of the Abbey's history have been lost, it is known from the early history of the dioceses of Tuam, Kilalla and Achonry that it was founded around 1428 on the site of an earlier church.  This probably explains why it was called Cille Abbey as ‘Cille’ is the Irish for church.  ‘Killeen’ from the Irish ‘CillÍn’ is the diminutive form of ‘Cille’, and so ‘Killeenbrenan’ is ‘Brenan’s little church of the Virgin Mary’.
